Sadly, many families will be separated from loved ones this Christmas while their children receive cancer treatment. You can bring comfort this Christmas.

Christmas is a special time for most of us, but for families who have children with cancer, it can be a daunting holiday both financially and emotionally. Children are often away from their siblings, beloved pets and their home.

Your kind gift will provide a home away from home and a support network to get through this the most challenging time.

This could be a reality for seven year old India and her mother Rhiannon from Bundaberg. India was diagnosed with Hepatocellular Carcinoma (Fibrolamellar Variant) a very rare form of liver cancer most common in older adults, typically those suffering alcoholism or had been exposed to Hepatitis A or B.

“India has had 2 of her 4 cycles of chemotherapy and I desperately hope that we can be home in Bundaberg for Christmas and we wait with baited breath to hear that we can go home only to come back in January for the next lot of appointments. The future isn’t clear for us yet." Says Rhiannon.

Cancer doesn’t go on recess for Christmas and most of our families still require to stay at our accommodation in Brisbane for the Christmas and New Year period. This means displaced and separated families at Christmas time, something no family should face.

But with your help, we can make sure they do not go through this alone.

Childhood Cancer Support needs your help to provide a home away from home and a supportive community this Christmas.

As one of Australia’s well-respected children’s cancer charities, Childhood Cancer Support has grown into a six-house facility comprising 17 fully self-contained family styled units that provides parents with a long-term accommodation alternative.

Family-Styled Accommodation

“A caring friend had found the contact number for Childhood Cancer Support. I had the number dialled but it was taking what was left of my strength to ring through. With swollen eyes and a deep breath I finally let it ring. At the other end of the phone a friendly voice picked up.

The relief that there was somewhere we could seek supportive accommodation near the hospital was overwhelming.” Says Rhiannon.

Family Social Worker Services

This year we recognised the need for a qualified Social Worker to provide specialised support and counselling to the families that stay with us. Our families have been longing for that emotional support. In July 2019 Monique joined us as our Family Social Worker.

Your gift will keep our social support services running and ensure that no family is left alone and unsupported this Christmas.
